Great Lakes - Day 5
We were up and had cereal for breakfast and were quickly on
the road. River Raisin National Historic
Park was a 45 minute drive from our campground.
We arrived just after 8:00 AM.
The park visitor center wasn’t open until 9:00 so we walked the trail
and read the interpretive signs about this battle where many soldiers were
killed during the War of 1812. It was
a beautiful but warm and sunny day and we got to watch the train roll by on our
walk. We stowed Yeti in the camper and
went inside to see the video and exhibits.
The ranger was particularly chatty and answered a lot of our
questions. Once Lorelei had her junior
ranger badge in hand, we were back on the road.
Our drive to Lansing, MI to see the capitol took longer than
planned because of traffic and a lunch stop but we found a great parking spot
and were pretty awed by this beautiful capitol building. Built after the civil war, it was one of the
most elaborately painted and decorated buildings we have been in. A top 5 capitol to be sure and maybe even the
#1.
A 3 hour drive had us at the Traverse City KOA which had a
bouncy pillow and the kids had a great time playing because the temperature had
become more pleasant and there were lots of other kids around. Sunset was around 9:30 and dinner and down
time had us up until almost 11.
