Great Lakes -Day 15 - Saturday
Our last day on the road and I finally slept well enough that I had to get up to an alarm. A quick shower and breakfast and we were on our way to George Rogers Clark National Historical Park. Now you might be asking yourself, because we were, who is George Rogers Clark? He was the brother of the famous Lewis & Clark that led a secret mission to overtake three forts along the Wabash and Ohio Rivers from the British during the Revolutionary war. He won and America was able to expand westward. They had a great park film and a terrific monument. The park ranger was a little over zealous on her imparting of knowledge but Lorelei finished her junior ranger badge and we were on our way to the Lincoln Boyhood home in Santa Claus, IN.
We have now been to the Lincoln Birthplace, his home in Springfield, Ford's Theatre and the monument in Washington so we wondered what it could really provide that we didn't already know. He was here in the wilderness, chopping wood and ferrying people to boats on the river between the ages of 7 and 21 before moving to Illinois. This is also where his mother and sister died. They were formative years. We saw the gravesite for his mother and the original spot where his cabin was found during excavation. This completed our National Parks for the trip and Lorelei returns home with 23 new badges and 4 more to be mailed back in.
After Lincoln, we stopped in to Santa Claus. They have a big Christmas store and Santa themed attractions (water slide, Rudolphs RV park, etc). Mostly we stopped so I could mail post cards from Santa Claus and then we were rolling again.
We stopped near Louisville, KY to have dinner in a restaurant and then have been rolling through states as quickly as possible. As of 12:30 AM we have made it to Lincolnton. Every one is looking forward to sleeping in their own beds tonight and Yeti is especially over being in the camper. I imagine our tiny 1450 square foot house will feel massive after living in our 150 square foot FunV for two weeks. I'm always sad to see our trips end because I'd prefer to live like a gypsy but for now I'll be satisfied with a few other trips and fun stuff ahead.
