Great Lakes - Day 14 - Friday
There's a sort of slow drudgery that comes with returning towards home on a two week road trip. After making a detour yesterday, we were up this morning and stopping in to the RV Hall of Fame and Museum at 9 AM. I actually did not know that it existed before yesterday. I happened to see it on a website but we figured we were this close and we needed to stop.
It was actually a really cool spot. They had RVs that went back to the early 1920's. Some were displayed with their 1920's era Ford Model T's. Others were tent trailers that were made from some of the finest wood work you have ever seen. There were 1970's RV's with shag carpet and awful upholstery. There were air streams and coachmen. Mae Wests travel car was included in the mix. Of course all it did for me was fuel my desire to be a full timer to the RV lifestyle. Just a few more years on that.
Moving on, we had a long drive to Indianapolis to visit the state Capitol. A few construction delays and we were there about 1:45. We found a meter spot to park and after taking our picture on the steps of the Capitol, we entered the building where a beautiful blue stained glass dome awaited us. Every Capitol building has similarities and differences. The first is always whether or not you have to go through metal detectors. Michigan which is open carry, you don't. Indianapolis, you do. They all have artwork or statues that depict justice and other stuff. We've also noticed that the central color in the senate chambers is a red or pinkish hue and that the house chambers tend to be blue. Not sure if this is intentional or not.
We headed out of the city in the direction of Terre Haute to head south to George Rogers Clark National Historical Park. Like most other states up here, we have been plagued with construction delays and when we reached Terre Haute at 4 PM and realized we might not make the next destination before closing time we decided to make an early stop and enjoy some relaxed time in the campground. We grilled hamburgers, had s'mores over the campfire and watched a movie. We should be sleeping in our own beds tomorrow night after two park stops.
