Great Lakes - Day 13 - Thursday
We all slept great last night and woke up in time to get on the road after our last cooked breakfast of bacon and eggs and rolls. The freezer is early empty which means the trip is almost over.
A quick drive into Madison and we were at the Capitol building. It was quite impressive and imposing us on the hill over looking the city where no other buildings are allowed to be taller. There wasn't much grassy grounds around the building but the curved entryway doors set us up for a magnificent inside. The ceiling of the dome was like most other Capitol buildings with stained glass and eaves that had tile representations of justice and education and other noble ideas like so many other buildings. But what set this one apart was the green marble columns and the other marble all over the building. I later read this was the 4th Capitol building, the third burnt down 5 weeks after the legislature voted to cancel the fire insurance. Oops. It is in an X pattern and has 4 wings, north, south, east and west. I was disappointed however because this was the first out of 31 states that you could not go into the senate or house chambers when not in session without a representative with you. We were under a time limit because we ran out of change after doing laundry and had to dig through our wallets and pockets to get 45 minutes on the meter.
Next we drove two hours to Milwaukee for a stop at the Harley Davidson museum. Just as we were arriving, so was a storm. It was very needed because you could cut the humidity in the air with a knife. We were lucky enough to get a spot under some trees so Yeti could be cool and dry in the FunV while we walked the museum. It's no surprise that this is the #1 attraction on Trip Advisor in Milwaukee. It was a great museum even if you aren't a HD or motorcycle fan. Lots of company history and a great example of 100+ years of making a product people want. We had lunch at the museum and tried the fried cheese curds. They were excellent. Originally we had hoped to hit Chicago but our generator isn't working and we couldn't leave Yeti with no AC in the heatwave they are having so we will hit the city and the park there another time.
The goal was to make Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore our last stop and camp but the idea of no AC and 80 degree sleeping was not at all appealing so we played on the shore, completed a junior ranger and headed an hour east to a KOA in Granger, Indiana for the night. We are making an unplanned detour tomorrow before we hit our last state Capitol of the trip.
